Jersey Post stamps celebrate the 1980s

Posted • 30 September 2020

1980s popular culture is the subject of a set of six stamps and a miniature sheet to be issued by Jersey Post on 6 October 2020.

The fourth instalment in a five part series looking back at popular culture through the decades, this new stamp issue follows on from the 50s, 60s and 70s, to explore different aspects of 1980s culture; namely language, music, fashion, events, food and drink, and leisure pursuits. Once again, the concepts and designs have been created by Hat-Trick Design (London) Ltd, working with specially commissioned illustrators.

A bold, bright, energetic decade, the 1980s brought with it a colour clash of fun fluorescents and pretty pastels. Often remembered as a decade of materialism and consumerism, the 1980s was a time for flamboyant fashions. Big shoulder pads, chunky jewellery and neon leg warmers became wardrobe staples, whilst a big perm, was the ‘must have’ hairstyle.

In Jersey, the 1980s are seen as the final decade of the Island’s post-war tourism boom, as air-fares to destinations abroad became less expensive. Jersey’s finance sector continued to grow and the workforce migrated from farm work and tourism towards jobs within the finance industry.

The miniature sheet accompanying the stamps has been created by illustrator and designer, Yoko Honda, who also illustrated the boombox for the £1.18 leisure stamp. It features a playful reimagining of Jersey’s main shopping street in the 1980s reflecting the vibrancy, fashions and colours synonymous with the decade.

A souvenir sheet, containing all six stamps has also been produced with the addition of a timeline, showing significant events of the 1980s including the marriage of Prince Charles to Lady Diana Spencer, the release of Michael Jackson’s ‘Thriller’ album and the invention of the world wide web.
